Spring Break Isn't Just for Kids - Here's My Tips for a "Budget Break"

Do you remember the commercial "Calgon, take me away!"? I do and if you're anything like me, then there are times when you just need a break from the budget. I know from personal experience that it can get frustrating to always account for everything. When you're working to get out of debt, it can seem very restrictive. When this starts to happen (or better yet - do this BEFORE you get frustrated), it's time to take a "break". Here are a few ideas that can give you some much needed breathing room:

1. Auto Pay is your friend. One of the easiest ways to "escape" the details of following a budget is to set things up on auto pay. This way, things happen automatically as they should and it's one less check to write. Most banks allow you to set up bill pay for free which can even save you the cost of the stamp!

2. "Secret" Cash Stash. Set aside a small cash stash that would allow you to go out to dinner or to a movie without taking it away from your bank account. This separate stash will allow you to have a nice occasional splurge without causing a dent in the monthly expenses.

3. Dream and plan. Take a vacation in your brain by dreaming about what you'll do when the debt is paid off.  Is there a vacation you'd like to take? New furniture you've had your eye on? Think about the future and you'll be reminded of what you're working so hard towards! (Just remember not to dream your way into more debt)

I have a plaque that says "Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life." and this is exactly what we're talking about this month. Yes, you need to do the right things with your budget but it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy your life too.  Try these three "breaks" this spring and see if it doesn't give you a sunnier outlook.
